The Story

From Yulia, my teacher in Tibetan Healing Procedure and student of Dr. Nida Chenagstang:

"Tibetan worldview believes that there are wind, fire, water, earth, and space. When the elements appeared, they were balanced. First, space was created, which brought forth consciousness. Wind, or Lum, formed the energy of movements. Fire was responsible for the metabolic process, action, and thinking. Water was like the liquid of the body.

The impure transfer of the elements, like wind to fire or earth to water, leads to an imbalance in the body. Tibetans call the imbalance 'ignorance' or 'marikba.' This happens when the person divides himself and the rest of the universe into two parts (instead of being in union).

The three escalating reasons for disease are:
1. Passion: A sort of wish, explained as- you are the subject and another person is the object. The energy from the subject to the object is passion.
2. Anger: A wish that the subject cannot have. It is a combination of passion and hatred. Anger is difficult to control.
3. Ignorance: An emotion to the Tibetans. It is the doubt and dullness. This causes one to be unable to move and understand one's circumstance.

In combination with the three reasons, these five conditions lead to disease:
1. Diet: Food behavior
2. Behavior
3. Accidents
4. Seasons
5. Provocation: The mind

Therefore, the process of disease, symbolically, goes as follows:
Wish - Rejection - Wrong Behavior - Accident - Hospitalization.

The original text of Tibetan medicine came from a 12th century poem. At that time, physicians in Tibet had to learn the poem by heart. They drew tree images, around 99 trees to be exact, to help them memorize the medical terms and treatments.

A physician in Tibet treated an ancient Emperor of China with the Five Nectars or Amritas. But, for reasons unknown, the emperor ordered the burning of all the original Tibetan medicinal texts. Luckily, physicians in China kept a secret record of this writing. In the 17th century, the King of Tibet re-organized this tradition and found the original translated texts through the descendants of these physicians.

Amrita is a nectar of painlessness and immortality, as the compilers of the recipe called five medicinal components in the composition.

Each of the "Five Nectars" treats specific diseases-
1. Siberian Juniper (shug-tsher): Amrita of the Gods
2. Ledum Palustre (ba-lui): Amrita of people
3. Daurian Mericariae (om-bu): Amrita of Nagas
4. Composition of coinferous evergreen plants' needles (ce-dum)
5. Artemisia Cold (Kham-ba): Amrita of Eight (sde-brgyad)

(This formula that I created is the American version. The herbs substituted for the ones in Siberia and Tibet are Myrtle, Pine Needles, Wormwood, Peppermint, Juniper).
